Downhill Mountain Biking : A Twist For Cross Country Riders

Most people don't realize that there are actually two types of mountain biking. The first is referred to as cross-country, and the second is downhill mountain biking. The differences between the two are quite significant, and biking down a mountain isn't necessarily the best bet for beginners, as it can be intimidating and dangerous. Before attempting the more difficult version of the sport, it is important to properly assess the risks involved.
Whereas cross-country biking concentrates on covering large amounts of terrain over longer periods of time, the down hill version of the sport is focused on racing down a trail as fast as possible. A cross-country trail run can range anywhere from a half an hour to over five hours, but riding down a mountain usually lasts only between five and fifteen minutes. Obviously, the potential for injury is much greater in the latter version of the activity and proper precautions need to be taken.
It is recommended that beginner riders spend a fair amount of time as cross-country bikers before attempting the sport's more difficult counter-part. Once a person is familiar with various trails and has a proper equipment base, the transition to riding downhill is much easier. Also, the risk of injury is significantly reduced, because riders are better able to handle their equipment and any new terrain challenges that may pop up. Some downhill trails include man-made obstacles that can severely impede a new rider. These obstacles include drop-offs, pitches and various rock formations.
Luckily, trails today are graded by their degree of difficulty and riders are advised to begin slowly. Stick to the trails fitting your expertise. You'll get a chance to work on form rather than speed and you won't impede more experienced riders. Above all, have fun and don't over-exert yourself during any cycling activity in an effort to do more than you are able to. Featured Merchants
