Too many mountain bikers are neglecting their bicycles and focusing too much on their cycling accessories.

The Exodus is a typical example of a cyclist getting overly involved in cycling accessories and not involved enough in their bicycle. Of course, a proper helmet is an absolute necessity, but for some cyclists the helmet is only the beginning of a quest for popularity and name brands. Would they have taken some extra time in their bike selection, they would have found their rides to be a whole lot easier.

Never buy a bicycle solely because of its name brand. That simply isn't a good enough reason. Don't ever buy a product just because it is endorsed by a certain person or group. Someone else's taste and personal preference can never be substituted for your own. If you must, invest in second-hand gear in order to afford the best bicycle you possibly can. Obviously, you don't need a professional bike right off the bat, but the best bike in your price range should be your goal. This might include one with a titanium frame.

Focusing on the quality of your bike rather than the color of your jersey or name on your gloves will undoubtedly leave you better off in the end. Focusing on the small and neglecting the big is a sure-fire way to get into unnecessary situations and on the fast track to injury. Looking good isn't the only concern when mountain biking. Performance and quality must always be in the back of your mind when you buy any product, but especially when you buy mountain bicycles.
