Invented in the 1800's, recumbent bicycles have had quite a few years to reach perfection. Today they are more versatile than ever and provide a rider with not only comfort, but speed as well.

Many people assume that recumbent bicycles are difficult to ride. Granted, they do require a bit of getting used to at first, but that doesn't mean one won't adjust to it easily. Recumbent bikes have one of two types of steering. There is below-seat steering and above-seat steering. Above-seat steering seems to be the preferred choice for beginners, but that isn't necessarily always the case.

When buying your first recumbent bike, test out quite a few before calling any one model your own. It might be hard to find the best fit at first simply because you aren't used to a reclined position for riding. Don't let this impact your choice too much, as you will get more used to the feeling as time passes. You don't want to short-change yourself.

Despite the popular myth out there, recumbent bikes are able to climb up hills with little difficulty. Most riders don't find it difficult to keep up with the traditional cyclists on the road. No matter what you ride however, always wear a properly fitting helmet. Just because some bicycles are low to the ground, doesn't mean you won't give you brain a good beating should you fall.
