Wearing specialized cycling shorts is a must for any serious cyclist.

Bike shorts are a necessity for any serious cyclist. Granted, if you are just starting out or are only going for a short bicycle ride, they might not be necessary for you. If however, you plan on pursuing biking seriously, don't even consider going without them for a second. There are things to consider before you run out to buy a pair - for instance shorts for mountain bikers need to be different than those meant for road cycling. Also, there are differences between boys cycling shorts and those meant for girls.

The job of cycling shorts is to protect your behind and to keep your private areas dry. Shorts allow you to ride for longer periods of time and they prevent chaffing and sores. By wicking moisture away from the skin, they reduce painful rashes and other uncomfortable issues. These shorts are not meant to be worn with underwear, and this might be difficult for those not used to going "commando". Don't decide to forgo the rules and wear your underwear anyway. They will only act as a trap for bacteria and they will render your shorts less effective.

The amount of padding needed in your shorts will vary depending on how much you ride and what you deem to be comfortable. Just because shorts have a lot of padding, doesn't mean they will necessarily be the best for you. Try to avoid gel padding, because it doesn't allow moisture to escape.

Lastly, wash your shorts after every use and get more than one pair if you ride often. Before you buy anything however, be sure to try on a number of styles and be sure each pair fits snuggly and comfortably. They will be an integral part of your cycling apparel.
