With all the confusing information out there for women cyclists, it is important to know the facts before heading into a bike shop.

Women's bicycling has seen a dramatic jump in popularity over the past few years. It began with an increase in traditional road biking and has since spread to mountain biking. The amount of women cycling has lead to a lot more gear specific to women, and informational resources. For women just starting out in either variation of the sport, there are a few key things to remember.

Contrary to what some experts may say, it is not necessary to have clothing and gear specifically designed for women. While cycling tops and shorts might fit better and be more comfortable, that isn't necessarily the case for bicycles and other equipment. Most bicycles designed specifically for women have frames that are built for women 5'5"and under. This means that taller women will be put at a distinct disadvantage. Don't buy a bike based on the gender for which it is designed. Always buy for fit and personal comfort. There is no short-cut for finding your perfect bike. You'll have to try a variety on for size and, if possible, take a few out for a test-ride.

Many experts recommend a seat built specifically for the female frame. Men's saddles are often too narrow to accommodate the width of most women's hips. However, most women-specific saddles are too wide to be comfortable. Also, many of them have much too much cushioning. This extra cushioning can lead to chaffing and sores. As when buying a bike, be sure to test a variety of saddles to find your perfect fit. With anything though, nothing beats going to the bike stores in your areas, asking questions and trying out the cycling products available.
